Final announced - off to Jeddah
The venue and date for the final has been confirmed – Friday 28 September in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
It has been a long time since my semi-final win over Holzken, but the most important thing to me is that my opponent is George Groves. I am grateful that they agreed to our request to postpone the final. Defeating Chris Eubank Jr would have taken my career nowhere.
I would have loved for this super fight to be in Britain – British fans are second to none. Two Brits fighting abroad is a bit unusual, but this tournament has been a bit unusual from the start. It’s been a bit different like the Champions League, but that is how it was sold to us boxers from the start. Let’s not forget that the great Ali travelled to Zaire and the Philippines for two of his biggest fights – both fights we still talk about today.
The World Boxing Super Series were clear that the boxers would lose control over who they fight and where the fights take place. I believe that is why other champions refused to enter. It couldn’t have been for financial reasons as the purses offered to us were far higher than what they have since earned. I was willing to lose that control in order to prove that I am the best super middleweight in the world. I fought and won in Germany and will now fight in Saudi Arabia.
I will sort something for any fans that travel to Saudi Arabia as a little thank you for such exceptional support. It is a costly trip but the support is much valued. I hope fans get behind this super fight, whether watching in person or on TV. If we deliver like I think we will, fans will be talking about this one for years to come.
It has always been a dream to become the number 1 in the division and now I have that opportunity. Now to get the job done inside the ring and bring those titles home.
